Telomeres are associated with aging, chronic diseases and early death. If the length of telomeres can be preserved, then the aging process can be stopped and age-related degenerative diseases could be prevented and there would be no early or premature deaths.

It is believed that shortening of telomeres is caused by oxidative stress which is caused by free radicals generated in normal or abnormal metabolism of fats and carbohydrates and environmental factors such as radiation. Because of this, a person's diet and lifestyle can have an impact on the length of telomeres. It has already been demonstrated in numerous studies that diet and lifestyle and the environment can all contribute to a person's health. So it is no surprise that these factors can influence the length of telomeres.

How can the telomeres be preserved? Studies suggest that anything that can help prevent diseases like heart disease and cancer and diabetes can also help prevent the shortening of telomeres. All antioxidants and many dietary supplements such as vitamin C and vitamin E, green tea, omega-3 fatty acids, lipoic acid, and resveratrol can help preserve telomeres. (DL)
