[*Jonathan Pearson-Stuttard; Kirk Allen; William Hooton; Peter Diggle; Simon Capewell; Martin O'Flaherty, Quantifying the UK Social and Economic Benefits of Potential Policies to Reduce dietary Trans Fats: Modelling Study. 2015*](http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/131/Suppl%5F1/AP325.short?ref=foodconsumer.org)Jonathan Pearson-Stuttard at University of Oxford and colleagues published a study in Circulation showing that a total ban on use of trans fat would save thousands of lives each year in the United Kingdom. Consumption of trans fat has been linked to increased risk for coronary heart disease. Harvard scientists estimated that 100,000 deaths in the United States each year are associated with eating trans fat. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently announced a total ban on trans fat in processed foods in three years. Some food processors have started using alternative oil/fats such as palm oil. Unfortunately, studies have suggested that the alternatives may not be as healthy as thought. (David Liu)
