Monday Sept 10, 2012 ([foodconsumer.org](http://www.foodconsumer.org/)) -- Kate Marsh whose affiliation is not immediately clear published a report in Diabetes Management saying that people eating a vegetarian diet were at reduced risk for diabetes mellitus type 2\.

The authors cited the recent Adventist Health Study II as finding that those who followed a vegan diet, meaning that they absolutely did not eat any food of animal origin were 49 percent less likely to develop diabetes mellitus type 2, compared to meat eaters.

Those lacto-ovo vegetarians, meaning they ate eggs and dairy products but no animal meat were also at a 46 percent reduced risk.

Early results from the study showed that vegetarians had a significantly lower risk for diabetes mellitus type 2, compared with non-vegetarians.

Many things can be done to reduce risk for diabetes mellitus. For instance, curcumin and cinnamon supplements can be very effective in preventing diabetes mellitus type 2\.
