A new study in Pharmaceutical Biology suggests that taking vitamin B12 supplements may alleviate toxins-induced hepatic fibrosis. The study led by Dr. Riaz Ahmad from Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh, UP, India and colleagues shows that Rats exposed to N′-nitrosodimethylamine suffered depletion of liver glycogen and B12 reserves and intense hepatic fibrosis while those exposed to NDMA but treated by vitamin B12 restored "liver function biomarkers, glycogen contents and hepatic vitamin B12 reserves." Additionally, vitamin B12 supplementation also facilitated restoration of normal liver architecture. The study concluded that vitamin B12 supplementation protects against NDMA-induced hepatic fibrosis in rats. (David Liu)
