- Description: Tufts researchers analysed data on more than 1,000 home-care patients aged 65 to 99 and found those with sufficient vitamin D scored better on cognitive tests, particularly measures of executive performance such as reasoning and cognitive flexibility. Researchers at Tufts University found elderly people with sufficient viatamin D were more likely to have better cognitive function.

Katherine Tucker and colleagues discovered the association after they analyzed data from a study of more than 1,000 participants eged 65 to 99 receiving home care. A high rate of the subjects had insufficient or deficient vitamin D.

Specifically, elderly people who had sufficient vitamin D performed better on cognitive function tests than those who didn't, according to the study.

Those who had sufficient levels of vitamin D performed better on the measures of "executive performance," such as cognitive flexibility, perceptual complexity, and reasoning.

The study was reported in the Journals of Gerontology, Series A, Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences.
