- Description: A meta-analysis of five studies found higher serum 25(OH)D at breast cancer diagnosis correlated with lower case fatality, with patients in the highest quintile 50% more likely to survive than those in the lowest. The authors urge restoring levels to 30-80 ng/ml with monitoring.

Saturday May 17, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study published this year in Anticancer Research suggests that taking vitamin D dietary supplements may help lower risk of death from breast cancer.

The study led by Sharif Mohr of the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA, U.S.A. and colleagues finds an association between high serum 25(OH)D and lower mortality from breast cancer.

The meta-analysis revealed higher serum levels of 25(OH)D were correlated with lower case-fatality rates after diagnosis of breast cancer. That is, patients in the highest quintile of 25(OH)D were 50% more likely to survive, compared with those in the lowest quintile.

To determine whether high serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D \[25(OH)D\] at diagnosis of breast cancer is correlated with longer survival, researchers analyzed data from five studies.

The researchers suggested "Serum 25(OH)D in all patients with breast cancer should be restored to the normal range (30-80 ng/ml), with appropriate monitoring." (David Liu)
