A new study finds patients with colorectal cancer were more likely to survive if they had high circulating vitamin D, specifically, 25-hydroxyvitamin D \[25(OH)D\].The meta-analysis of data from eligible studies shows that patients with colorectal cancer in the highest quintile of vitamin D were 37% less likely to die during the follow-up, compared with those in the lowest quintile. The study concludes "These results suggest that colorectal cancer patients with deficient levels of serum 25(OH)D should have their levels restored to a normal range (30–80 ng/ml)."Sharif B.
