- Description: People with serum 25(OH)D below 37 nmol/L were 157 percent more likely to be hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia and 75 percent more likely for sepsis, after adjustment for other conditions. The analysis covered 132 pneumonia and 422 sepsis patients plus controls.

Friday June 13, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Taking vitamin D supplements may help prevent infections like pneumonia and sepsis. Early studies have already shown supplementation with vitamin D can prevent flu and colds.

Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels have been associated with acute infections. The current study shows that vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency could increase risk of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and sepsis.

After adjustment for diabetes mellitus, renal disease, and peripheral vascular disease, individuals with serum vitamin D (25(OH)D) lower than 37 nmol/L were 157% more likely to be hospitalized for CAP. The association resulted from an analysis of data from 132 CAP patients and controls who were aged 60 plus or minus 17 years.

Similarly, those with 25(OH)D levels <37 nmol/L after adjustment for confounders were 75% more likely to be hospitalized for sepsis. This association was derived from an analysis of data from 422 sepsis patients and controls who were aged 65 plus or minus 14 years.

The study concluded "Vitamin D status was inversely associated with risk of CAP and sepsis hospitalization in a community-living adult population."

Vitamin D is known to protect against bacterial and vial infections because of the antibacterial peptides it makes can boost innate immunity against those infections. That is why supplementation with vitamin D can prevent flu and colds. (David Liu, PHD)
