Tuesday july 17, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- Eating Western diet, which often consists of high fat, high added sugar and high protein, or simply high meat and dairy product and added sugar, increases risk of developing type 2 diabetes and dying from coronary heart disease, according to a new study published on July 10, 2012 in the journal Circulation.

Western diet fast food intake has been associated with higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease in the United States. But the study showed Singapore Chinese men and women who ate Western style fast food twice a week were 27 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and 56 percent more likely to die from coronary heart disease, compared to those who hardly ate any.

The study involved tens of thousands of men and women aged 45 to 74 years of age who enrolled in the Singapore Chinese Health Study from 1993 through 1998\. By Dec. 31, 2009, 1397 deaths from coronary heart disease were identified out of 52,584 participants. By 2004, 2252 cases of type 2 diabetes were identified out of 43176 participants.

The associations were adjusted for demographic, lifestyle, and dietary factors. Adjustment for overall dietary pattern, energy intake and body mass index did not seem to affect the associations.

The researchers concluded "Western-style fast food intake is associated with increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and of coronary heart disease mortality in an Eastern population."
