Wed. March 16, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- March 17th of this year is St. Patrick’s Day. Many food consumers know what to wear. But what are the best healthy green foods they can eat on this special day? [Abbott Nutrition](http://www.nutritionnews.abbott/nutrition-as-medicine/five-green-superfoods-.html?ref=foodconsumer.org) recommends that you should use at least five green foods including green tea, spirulina, kiwi, edamame, and spinach.

1) Green tea offers potent antioxidants like epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, which has been known to protect against chronic diseases including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Green tea extracts can be purchased from local or online health stores. This green food is a good antioxidant supplement.

2) Spirulina is considered a super food that provides all sorts of macro nutrients, particularly protein, and micro nutrients such as vitamins and minerals that are not available from meats. This green food is commonly used as a dietary supplement or a healthy food.

3) Kiwi is most well-known for its high vitamin C or ascorbic acid. Those who are using high doses of this vitamin C should have already known that this vitamin can help fight free-radical damage and inflammation. Vitamin C helps heal wounds and boosts immunity against infections among other things. This green food is one of the best sources for vitamin C.

4) [Edamame ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edamame?ref=foodconsumer.org)which has been already popular as a healthy food in Asian countries. Its high protein can help maintain healthy muscles, bones, and skin. This green food may also protect female fertility and lower risk of heart disease, bone disease and cognitive decline.

5\. Spinach contains high amounts of green pigments and nutrients in this green food including vitamin A, B6, C and minerals including calcium, iron and potassium. Regular high intake of this green food may reduce risk for gastric cancer, breast cancer and skin cancer.
