- Description: Mobility-limited adults aged 70 to 85 who took 40 g of whey protein concentrate daily gained more lean mass, muscle area and strength than controls, though the researchers concluded the supplement added no benefit beyond resistance training itself.

Friday Nov 16, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- Taking some whey protein concentrate supplements from time to time can be a good practice for older adults particularly in mobility-limited older adults because whey protein may help lean mass, muscle strength and physical function, according to a study in Journal of Genrontology Series A: Biological Science and Medical Science.

The study led by A. Chalé of Tufts University in Boston, MA and colleagues shows that mobility-limited adults aged 70 to 85 years increased their lean mass, muscle and muscle strength after taking 40 grams of whey protein concentrate per day for six months.

In the study, 80 mobility-limited adults were given either 40 grams of whey protein concentrate per day or an isocaloric control for 60 days.

Those who used whey protein concentrate increased lean mass by 1.3%, compared to 0.6% in controls and also had muscle cross-sectional area increased by 4.6%, compared to 2.9% in controls.

Those who used whey protein concentrate also had muscle strength increased by16 to 50%, compared to those controls.

The researchers concluded "These data suggest that WPC (whey protein concentrate) supplementation at this dose does not offer additional benefit to the effects of RT (resistance training) in mobility-limited older adults."

Whey protein concentrate is often used for body building. Some researchers recommend 150 grams or more of whey protein concentrate per day for such a purpose.
