- Description: Six psoriasis patients took 20 grams a day of nondenatured whey protein isolate for three months, and their psoriasis area and severity improved. The researchers link the effect to earlier work showing whey raises circulating glutathione.

Friday Nov 22, 203 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study in Journal of Clinical Aesthetical Dermatology suggests that taking whey protein isolate as a dietary supplement may help psoriasis - a common autoimmune disease with high levels of systemic inflammation and oxidative stress.

The study led by R. Prussick and colleagues from George Washington University in Washington, DC shows that patients with psoriasis orally taking nondenatured bioactive whey protein isolate in a dose of 20 grams per day for three months improved their condition.

The researchers believed whey protein isolate may help psoriasis because their previous research revealed that supplementation with whey protein isolate can increase circulating glutathione, which is known to help relieve oxidative stress as seen in psoriasis. The current study was intended to establish a direct association between whey protein isolate supplements and the condition of psoriasis.

For the study, six patients with psoriasis were enlisted and assigned to receive whey protein isolate continuously for three months. At baseline, and monthly for three months, psoriasis area and severity were assessed.

Whey protein isolate is a popular source of protein that bodybuilders often use for body building. Another similar protein is whey protein concentration. These proteins are available on the Internet and local health stores. (David LIu, PHD)
