According to the [National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)](http://answers.usa.gov/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1000&PARTITION%5FID=1&CMD=VIEW%5FARTICLE&USERTYPE=1&LANGUAGE=en&COUNTRY=US&ARTICLE%5FID=12286&ref=foodconsumer.org), beginning in the mid-19th century, several generations of woman suffrage supporters lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and practiced civil disobedience to achieve what many Americans considered a radical change in the [U.S. Constitution](http://answers.usa.gov/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1000&PARTITION%5FID=1&CMD=VIEW%5FARTICLE&USERTYPE=1&LANGUAGE=en&COUNTRY=US&ARTICLE%5FID=10390&ref=foodconsumer.org). Militant suffragists used tactics such as parades, silent vigils, and hunger strikes.

Signed into law on August 26, 1920, the [U.S. Constitution's 19th Amendment](http://www.archives.gov/historical-docs/document.html?doc=13&title.raw=19th%20Amendment%20to%20the%20U.S.%20Constitution%3A%20Women%26apos%3Bs%20Right%20to%20Vote&ref=foodconsumer.org) guarantees American women the right to vote. It was the culmination of a 72-year-long civil rights movement, which originated at the [world's first women's rights convention](http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/trr040.html?ref=foodconsumer.org). On August 26 each year, the United States celebrates this milestone through Women's Equality Day.
