Sunday Jan 4, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- Erectile dysfunction is more common in male diabetes mellitus patients, than men without the metabolic syndrome. A study reported in The Journal of Urology suggests that yohimbine hydrochloride (HCL) may help erectile impotence in some of these patients.

J. G. Susset and colleagues from Providence Veterans Administration Medical Center in Rhode Island, USA conducted a double-blind trial to test and see how daily supplementation with no more than 42 mg of oral yohimbine hydrochloride affects 82 patients with sexual impotence. Many of these patients suffered from diabetes and vascular pathological conditions which are risk factors for erectile dysfunction.

After one month of supplementation, 14% of patients completely restored and sustained erection and 20% of the patients experienced a partial response to the yohimbine supplementation. 3 patients reported a positive effect of yohimbine HCl on their erection.

The maximum effects were found after 2 to 3 weeks of [yohimbine HCl](http://www.ebay.com/itm/281552613875?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&%5Ftrksid=p3984.m1555.l2649&ref=foodconsumer.org) supplementation and few and benign side effects were observed. Remember that the yohimbine HCl dosage is 42 mg per day.

The authors commented that this therapy is a promising impotence treatment, considering that many of the patients suffered diabetes mellitus and vascular pathology.

Yohimbine is an indole alkaloid isolated from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree in Central Africa, according to wikipedia. This stimulant with aphrodisiac and mild MAOI effects may be the mostly used treatment for erectile dysfunction. (David Liu)
