More than 36 million American adults suffer from some degree of hearing loss and an additional 12 million have hearing loss as a result of prolonged exposure to noise. Sam Thomasson, founder of Zounds Hearing Inc., has firsthand experience with the frustrations of hearing loss as his daughter, Kate, has been hearing impaired since early childhood.

"Hearing loss had become an epidemic in our country," said Thomasson, "and the effects of untreated hearing loss can be devastating. Early onset of dementia, increased risk of falls and depression are just a few of the health issues that can arise as a result of untreated hearing loss. We celebrate National Better Hearing Month to not only keep the public informed, but to also promote the importance of prevention and treatment." During the month of May, Zounds franchisees in over 33 states will be distributing information on hearing loss prevention, as well as offering free hearing screenings in their stores.

Zounds Hearing, Inc. has been committed to promoting better hearing by providing hearing aids to those who would otherwise not be able to afford them. In a partnership with the Lion's Sight and Hearing Foundation in Phoenix, Arizona, Zounds has donated over $800,000 in new hearing aids to those in need. "Giving to and serving others is a privilege," said Kyle Kennedy, President of Zounds Hearing Franchising, LLC, "and to see the faces of those who receive our hearing aids and are able to hear for the first time in a long while is a tremendous experience. Zounds intends to continue this partnership with the Sight and Hearing Foundation on an ongoing basis."
