Nearly 4000 Americans Die from H1N1

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that the death toll from H1N1 may be four times higher than previously estimated.

The CDC earlier estimated 1,000 deaths associated with H1N1 flu.   However, since then the agency has been scrupulously analyzing data from each individual state.  Additionally, they have included deaths from flu-related complications, such as pneumonia and other bacterial infections.

Their analysis has revealed that H1N1 has infected 22 million people in the United States; eight million of whom are children, since April.  The virus and its complications have killed about 4,000 Americans, including 540 pediatric deaths.

The CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat calls these numbers alarming:  "I have already seen a larger number of deaths than we have had for several years - I do believe that pediatric death toll from this pandemic will be extensive and much greater than what we see with seasonal flu," she says.

Compared to other diseases, the risk of dying from H1N1 virus remains small. For children, the death risk is 540 out of 8,000,000.  Early data indicate that the majority of children who have died from H1N1 suffered from other underlying health conditions; a small proportion of children who died were apparently healthy.

Federal Health officials say that even though the risk of dying from H1N1 is small, the number of deaths associated with flu-like illnesses and secondary infections are higher when compared to the data collected during the same period in past years. Also, unlike seasonal flu, H1N1 poses a higher risk of hospitalization in children, along with a higher mortality rate among the elderly.

At higher risk are those who have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, weakened immunity and chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.

The CDC also says that 36000 die a year from the seasonal flu. So it sounds like this has been a pretty mild year for the flu. Relax.........

And how many will die of in a car accident daily? >100/day. Half of those are alcohol-related. Over 350,000 will die of smoking-related disease. How much money, fear, news, etc. do we see thrown at these threats? Little to none. Americans are trained to be alarmist, but the real threats remain ignored. Nature needs to clean house.

The vaccine is bad news bears. My brother works with a maker of the vaccine and he has read reports of permanent neurological problems with children who took the vaccine causing developmental problems.

I've read how the vaccines haven't been tested by scientific methods, ywet they're touted over natural healing methods, which actually HEAL.

I've never had flu or flu shots; I'm 63 years old. I did not have my two sons (now healthy 19 and 23 years old) vaccinated.

The Swine Flu vaccines are a scam for Big Pharma to scarf up billions at the taxpayer trough.

If it is human life you care about and if you really want to stop the death train, try a war on cigarettes and tobacco. How about 300,000 killed a year by this poison? How about 300,000,000 the world over each year? Let us not plat pattycake with BS and scare tactics, let us, if we have any sense left, see the real killers.

Use your intuition...mine says stay away from the fear mongering and trust your body to take care of itself. It doesn't hurt to excercise some degree of healthful living. The body naturally gets ill on occasion to cleanse..."don't supress lest ye regress"

Let's see: 4,000 / 307,941,982 = 0.000012%. Humm. I don't think I'll panic yet.

Oops forgot to multiply by 100... So, it's about 0.0012%. Still not panicking. Somebody check my math.

My question: how many of those deaths occurred BEFORE being hospitalized and receiving medical treatment?

Has anybody noticed there is no time frame for these deaths, or did I miss something? Is this in the last year? decade? 20 minutes? Shouldn't there be some frame of reference here? I realize the article states that "H1N1 has infected 22 million people in the United States; eight million of whom are children, since April." Are the stats people using this time frame or another? The article is not clear. Just thought I'd point that out.

Time frames? Time frames?! We don't need no stinkin' time frames!!! It's cumulative deaths most likely. If you can figure out when the "first officially counted" death from N1H1 happened, please share.

Your report in nothing more than BS, the CDC on your article says they added other deaths from flu-like symptoms. They actually don't know. And you report that they all died from this man made virus. What happened to journalism 101, report the facts, not opinions.
You are all full of CRAP. How about you guys do some research first before you report it. Your grade on this is an F.

This is another government policy to control your life. More people die from car accidents than this swine flu. Get real people. Take care of yourself and stop asking the government to control your life.

"The vaccine is bad news bears. My brother works with a maker of the vaccine and he has read reports of permanent neurological problems with children who took the vaccine causing developmental problems."

1. Doing what, packing boxes?
2. No he hasn't. There are a few new articles about kids in China being injured by vaccines, but that's because everything in China is 50% lead. More to the point, the vaccine hasn't even been around long enough to cause something that would be described as "permanent developmental problems". The phrase implies that a given amount of development which should have occurred in said children has not occurred during the time it was expected. It's incredibly difficult to do studies like that when you have years to perform them, decades of data, and millions of dollars. The effect would have to be large and widespread to be noticeable by now, and would be receiving as much hand-waving coverage as the flu itself, probably more.

"I've read how the vaccines haven't been tested by scientific methods, ywet they're touted over natural healing methods, which actually HEAL.

I've never had flu or flu shots; I'm 63 years old. I did not have my two sons (now healthy 19 and 23 years old) vaccinated.

1. Yes they have.
2. You wouldn't know a scientific method if you formulated a hypthesis on your ass, tested the hypothessis and found it lacking, reformulated the hypothesis on your ass, and repeated the process until the hypothesis fit all data and made accurate predictions about future behavior of your ass.
3.The vast majority of "Natural" methods don't heal. A tiny fraction are helpful, most do nothing, and a few are dangerous.
4."Natural" methods that affect the body are effective because the items used contain active chemicals. Real medicines dispenses these same chemicals in controlled doses, making them safer and more predictable.
5.The previous two items are true because "Natural" methods, in your own words, "haven't been tested by scientific methods". Once your hippie tea has been "tested by scientific methods", "big pharma" will distill it into a pill with a reliable dose (you know, so you don't accidentally kill yourself by overdosing on it), bottle it, and sell it. If their "scientific methods" determine that the pill in question destroys your liver or melts your eyeballs, "big pharma" will not sell it to you (unlike the naturopath, who will sell you anything he finds growing in his backyard, no testing required!).
6.Yours sons are healthy because of herd immunity. They don't have polio because they went to public school with thousands of children who have been vaccinated against polio. If your sons had gone to school when polio had actually been a problem, there is a good chance they would have contracted it. The more people are not vaccinated, the more likely polio is to come back. It's not a difficult concept.
7.The swine flu vaccines are a big scam? The swine flu vaccines are swine flu vaccines. They prevent swine flu. In the sense that swine flu is not a problem on the scale of polio, the hype and drive to get people vaccinated is probably unnecessary. It is, for the most part, just a vicious flu. People die of the flu all the time, and fewer would die if more people were vaccinated every year, but it's not a national crisis.

People who are vulnerable, or near the vulnerable should get vaccinated. If the vaccine becomes more available, it's not a bad idea to get one whether or not you are vulnerable or near vulnerable people. The amount of money big pharma makes off of the vaccine is irrelevant to any argument about its effectiveness or importance. The amount of money big pharma makes off of the vaccine should be reserved for arguments about software/biological patents, corporate power, and healthcare reform.

Well, the "any press is good press" notion seems not to apply in this case, Author. Thankfully, poor reporting is often a direct route to the back of the line. Better luck next time. Do your homework.
