A woman in the Philippines with stage 4 pancreatic cancer refused chemotherapy and used a plant-based diet, carrot juice, coffee enemas, vitamin C and supplements; her pancreatic cancer test results normalized. Told she had three to six months, she died in August 2015 of an unknown cause.

Got stage 4 kidney cancer? You don't have to die
The American Cancer Society puts five-year survival for stage 4 kidney cancer at 8 percent in the U.S. and 5 percent in the UK. The piece describes one man who had two surgeries, then changed his diet and took supplements, and has lived seven years. It calls him lucky and invites inquiries.

Allergies during pregnancy contribute to changes in the brains of rat offspring
Ohio State researchers found allergen exposure during pregnancy changed the brains of rat fetuses and newborns, and that exposed animals grew into adults showing hyperactivity, antisocial behavior and less anxiety. Lenz says prenatal allergens may be an underappreciated developmental factor.

Hypertension is more dangerous than diabetes mellitus in older while adults
In the Rancho Bernardo Study, white adults 55 and older with hypertension were 93% more likely to die from any cause over about 14 years, against 40% for those with diabetes. After adjusting for other risk factors, hypertension still carried the higher mortality.
Disease
Stress-induced changes in maternal gut could negatively impact offspring for life
In mice, Ohio State researchers found that stress during pregnancy altered bacteria in the mothers' guts and placentas and in their female offspring's intestines into adulthood. Those offspring showed more anxiety and more trouble learning, alongside higher inflammation markers.
Disease
Study reveals role of spleen in prolonged anxiety after stress
Ohio State researchers report that in mice, white blood cells building up in the spleen after repeated social defeat appear to signal the brain and contribute to lasting anxiety, with the immune changes persisting nearly a month. The work was presented at Neuroscience 2016.

Could bacteria cause breast cancer?
A study in Applied and Environmental Microbiology found Lactococcus and Streptococcus at high levels in breast cancer tissue, and Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus and Bacillus mainly in tissue from women without cancer. Whether the bacteria cause the disease is unknown.
Disease
Douches, Talcum Powder Linked to Ovarian Cancer
In a survey of 1,274 women, douching was associated with a 34% higher risk of ovarian cancer and genital talcum powder use with a 76% higher risk, with risk greater still when both were used. Frequent tampon use showed no association.
Disease
Epstein-Barr virus may cause breast cancer
A study of Syrian women found breast tissue carrying both Epstein-Barr virus and high-risk HPV was associated with high-grade invasive ductal carcinoma and lymph node involvement, while either virus alone tracked with lower-grade tumors. Earlier work found EBV in 52% of 108 samples.
Disease
Epstein-Barr virus, HPV linked to invasive breast cancer
Of 108 breast cancer samples from Syrian patients, 32% carried both Epstein-Barr virus and high-risk HPV, and that combination was associated with high-grade invasive tumors. Samples carrying only one virus were usually lower-grade ductal carcinomas.

FDA: Allergy Relief for Your Child
Weeks of sneezing with a stuffy or runny nose may point to allergic rhinitis rather than a cold, the FDA says. Up to 40 percent of children have it, and the agency, which regulates allergy medicines and allergen extracts, urges care when giving them to children.
Disease
Potential risk factors for primary brain tumors
A Canadian review links adult primary brain tumors to genetic variants, pesticide exposure, farming or hairdressing work, processed meat and hair dye, and childhood cases to high birth weight and pesticide exposure. A separate meta-analysis tied vitamin C intake to lower glioma risk.
Disease
Could periodontitis be a sign or cause for Alzheimer's disease?
A six-month study of 60 elderly people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's found periodontitis at baseline correlated with cognitive decline, and both conditions tracked with the severity of systemic inflammation. The study found no evidence that gum disease causes Alzheimer's.
Disease
Early menarche linked to gestational diabetes mellitus
Among 27,000 women in the Nurses' Health Study II, those whose first period came at 11 or younger were 34 percent more likely to develop gestational diabetes than those starting at 14 or older. The extra risk was largely mediated by pre-pregnancy body fat.
Disease
Common Signs of Zinc Deficiency
Benita Lee of LabDoor explains zinc's role in hundreds of enzymes, DNA synthesis, cell division, immunity and wound healing, then walks through what deficiency looks like: slowed growth, lost appetite and weight, altered nervous system development and mental slowness.
Disease
Diabetes mellius linked to dementia
The Rotterdam Study, published in Neurology, found diabetes almost doubled the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease, with patients on insulin 330% more likely to develop dementia. The author notes this could reflect either the severity of the disease or the insulin treatment itself.

Zika virus: What you need to know? - updated
A Q&A describes Zika as spread by daytime Aedes mosquitoes, usually causing a mild week-long illness but posing danger in pregnancy. A February 2016 update adds that no evidence yet confirms the virus causes microcephaly, and that sexual transmission has been reported.
Disease
Type 2 diabetes mellitus linked to kidney stones
A study in Advanced Biomedical Research found kidney stones at least 30 percent more common in people with type 2 diabetes, with uric acid stones making up 36 percent of their stones against 11 percent in non-diabetics. Their urine was more acidic, pH 5.61 against 6.87.
