Infertility linked to diabetes mellitus
In the Nurses' Health Study II, women with a history of infertility were 20% more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes over 14 years of follow-up. Risk rose 43% when the infertility came from ovulation disorders and 34% when it came from tubal factors.

Type 2 diabetics face high cancer risk
Analyzing a nationwide Swedish database, researchers found raised risk at 24 cancer sites in people with type 2 diabetes, with colon, liver, pancreatic, endometrial and kidney cancers elevated throughout follow-up. Insulin use was linked to higher cancer risk.
Disease
Diabetes mellitus linked to higher risk of bladder cancer
An Italian case-control study of 690 bladder cancer patients and 665 hospital controls found people with diabetes about twice as likely to be diagnosed with bladder cancer, with longer diabetes duration linked to higher risk. Why the association exists is unknown; insulin and IGF-1 may play a part.

Study explains why periodontitis linked to heart disease
A study in Infection and Immunity suggests the gum pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, rather than periodontitis itself, drives heart risk. In aortic smooth muscle cell cultures its gingipains raised proinflammatory angiopoietin 2 and suppressed anti-inflammatory angiopoietin 1.
Disease
Alzheimer's disease may be transmitted through medical procedures
A study in Nature raises the possibility that the amyloid beta proteins behind Alzheimer's can spread like prions. About 6% of people treated with growth hormone taken from cadaver pituitaries developed CJD, and some also showed Alzheimer's pathology. The study is observational.

Half of all cancers - news email 080515 from EWG
An EWG newsletter promoting its report “Rethinking Carcinogens,” which draws on Halifax Project research suggesting that combinations of chemicals — including some not carcinogenic on their own — may cause cancer by disrupting several cancer-related pathways at once.

Autism and prodigy share a common genetic link
Ohio State and Nationwide Children's Hospital researchers report in Human Heredity that child prodigies in their sample share genetic variations on chromosome 1 with family members who have autism. They have not identified the mutations, only the shared region.

Induced abortion linked to breast cancer risk
The American College of Pediatricians issued an April 7 release urging women, especially adolescents, to weigh its claimed link between induced abortion and later breast cancer, citing dose-response studies from China, India and Romania. It says miscarriage carries no such association.

Dermatologists' Tips to Treat and Control Dandruff
American Academy of Dermatology dermatologists say dandruff is not caused by poor hygiene and that over-shampooing or over-brushing only damages hair. They advise following the shampoo bottle's instructions, alternating active ingredients, and adjusting frequency by hair type.

Female infertility linked to diabetes mellitus
Among 112,106 Nurses' Health Study II participants followed 24 years, women reporting infertility had a 20% higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Risk was 43% higher when infertility came from ovulation disorders and 34% higher for tubal factors; endometriosis showed no link.

Frostbite: Prevention and Treatment
A dermatologist's advice for freezing weather: wear loose layers with a moisture-wicking base, wool or fleece insulation and a windproof, waterproof shell; put two pairs of socks inside insulated waterproof boots that cover the ankle; cover your head and ears; and avoid anything tight.

Male diabetes mellitus patients at low risk for prostate cancer
A cohort study in the International Journal of Cancer followed 139,131 men in the EPIC study and found those with type 2 diabetes 26 percent less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. In a 626-man subgroup, diabetics had lower androstenedione and testosterone.

Hepatitis C Reaches Historic Highs
A press pitch offering an expert on hepatitis C, citing CDC estimates of 3.2 million infected Americans and WHO figures of 130-150 million chronic infections worldwide with 350,000 to 500,000 deaths a year. Most carriers are unaware, and treatment can reach $1,000 a pill.
Disease
Alzheimer's disease found in 32% of old adults who died in 2010
Rush University Medical Center researchers report that 32 percent of older adults who died in 2010 had Alzheimer's disease, about 600,000 people aged 65 and over. They expect the share to reach 43 percent, or an estimated 1.6 million Americans, by 2050.

Researchers reveal lung cancer can stay hidden for over 20 years
Cancer Research UK scientists studied lung tumours from seven patients and found the disease can sit undetected for more than 20 years before new genetic faults trigger rapid growth. Each section of a tumour then evolves separately, making every part genetically unique.
