A 2016 JAMA Oncology study of 1,666 breast cancer patients found those in the highest tertile of serum vitamin D at diagnosis were 28% less likely to die during follow-up than those in the lowest, with a stronger association among premenopausal women.

Vitamin D may help fight prostate cancer
Among 1,000 prostate cancer patients followed for 23 years, those with higher circulating vitamin D at diagnosis were 28 percent less likely to die of the disease, an observational study found. Whether vitamin D prevents prostate cancer remains unclear.

Vitamin C helps stage 3 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma
A case report describes a 69-year-old woman with stage III diffuse large B-cell lymphoma who took five weeks of radiation and intravenous vitamin C but refused chemotherapy, and showed no sign of the disease 10 years later. Researchers believed the vitamin C played a part.
Vitamins
Breast cancer patients should take vitamin D supplements
A study by Brian Feldman at Stanford, published in Endocrinology, suggests keeping serum vitamin D sufficient may help prevent breast cancer from spreading. In two animal models vitamin D suppressed the Id1 gene, whose protein takes part in tumor progression.
Vitamins
Vitamin D3 supplements help Crohn's disease
In a randomized study of 34 Crohn's patients in remission, 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily raised 25-hydroxy-vitamin D levels and lowered relapse risk during the trial compared with 1,000 IU. Both doses improved depression and showed a good safety profile.

Antioxidant vitamins help children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who took in more antioxidant vitamins had better outcomes: more vitamin C was linked to fewer therapy delays and less toxicity, more vitamin E to fewer infections.
Vitamins
Vitamin C fights breast cancer with or without chemo
In two breast cancer cell lines, high concentrations of vitamin C killed cancer cells, and both low and high doses boosted the cytotoxicity of doxorubicin, cisplatin and paclitaxel, a 1996 laboratory study found. Vitamin C and doxorubicin showed definite synergy.

Higher Dose of Vitamin D May Benefit Pregnant Women
USDA and UC Davis scientists report in The Journal of Nutrition that a vitamin D dose above the 400 IU common in prenatal supplements may reduce inflammation in pregnancy. Surveys suggest deficiency affects up to 69 percent of pregnant American women.
Vitamins
Vitamin B12b boosts anticancer effect of ascorbic acid
A 2007 report by Russian Academy of Sciences researchers found vitamin B12b increased the hydrogen peroxide, oxidative stress, DNA strand breaks and cell death that ascorbic acid produced in human larynx carcinoma cells. Iron chelators and catalase blocked much of the effect.
Vitamins
Vitamin b12 important for kids' cognition
A review in Advances in Nutrition notes that inadequate vitamin B-12 intake or blood levels during pregnancy and early childhood are associated with impaired cognitive development, and that no study has tested whether B-12 supplements benefit children's cognition.
Vitamins
Vitamin D may help diabetes mellitus patients
In a randomised trial, type 2 diabetes patients took 4,000 IU of cholecalciferol daily if their serum vitamin D was below 20 ng/mL, or 2,000 IU if it was 20 to 30 ng/mL, for 16 weeks. The researchers found supplementation improved endothelial function.
Vitamins
Cancer patients may need thiamine supplements
Among 217 cancer inpatients referred for psychiatric consultation at a large cancer center, 55.3 percent were thiamine deficient, a Psycho-Oncology study found. The authors link it largely to fluorouracil-based chemotherapy and weight loss, and urge oncologists to watch for it.
Vitamins
Dietary antioxidants reduce risk of ischemic stroke
Among 34,555 people in the Swedish National March Cohort, women in the highest quartile of dietary nonenzymatic antioxidant capacity were 27% less likely to have a stroke and 35% less likely to have an ischemic stroke. No benefit appeared in men or for hemorrhagic stroke.

Study reveals how vitamin D protects against prostate cancer
Stanford researchers report that calcitriol lowers expression of the COX-2 gene and raises expression of 15-PGDH, reducing levels of prostaglandins that promote prostate cancer growth. They suggest pairing it with NSAIDs that inhibit COX activity.
Vitamins
Vitamin D fights pancreatic cancer
A case report describes a woman with pancreatic cancer who mistakenly took 50,000 U of vitamin D daily, reached a very high blood level without symptoms, and whose cancer stayed stable for eight months without conventional treatment. The authors only ask whether the dose helped.
Vitamins
Intravenous vitamin C cures Zika virus infection quickly
A case report describes a 57-year-old woman in Puerto Rico who recovered from Zika infection after three days of intravenous vitamin C, against a typical two weeks. It rests on a single patient, and the authors suggest the treatment may help other viral infections.
Vitamins
Dietary folate lowers gastric cancer
A South Korean case-control study in Cancer Research found people with high dietary folate intake were 30 percent less likely to be diagnosed with gastric cancer than those with low intake, with the protection strongest among carriers of certain gene variants.
Vitamins
Pharmacologic vitamin C effective against influenza A
At Chest World Congress 2016, Linling Cheng reported that pharmacologic doses of vitamin C reduced or eliminated the infectivity of Tamiflu-resistant influenza A viruses in cell studies and cut lung viral titers 10- to 100-fold in mice, preventing weight loss and death. Oral doses did not.
