Lupus-prone mice fed a high-fat diet for 14 weeks developed albuminuria far more often than controls, 57 percent against 20 percent, and showed impaired carotid artery relaxation and more ovarian fat. The authors say such a diet would raise cardiovascular risk in lupus.

Mutation: HIV's Achilles' Heel
Rather than slowing HIV's rapid mutation, University of Minnesota researchers tried speeding it up. Screening FDA-approved drugs, they found the cancer drugs decitabine and gemcitabine together cut HIV infectivity by 73% in lab tissue, at concentrations with minimal antiviral activity alone.

Controversy Surrounds Link Between CFS and HIV
Researchers from NIH, FDA and Harvard Medical School report in PNAS finding gene sequences from MRV-related viruses in the blood cells of 33 of 37 chronic fatigue syndrome patients, against 3 of 44 healthy people. Four earlier studies had failed to confirm a 2009 Science report of such a link.

Renaissance Research in AIDS Prevention
NIAID-led researchers identified two human antibodies that neutralized more than 90 percent of HIV strains in the laboratory, against 30 to 40 percent for the best antibodies found earlier, and showed how they work. The technique could be applied to other infectious diseases.

Texas Offers Free HIV Testing
Texas cities including Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston and San Antonio offer free testing on National HIV Testing Day, June 27. NAPWA started the day in 1995; the CDC estimates 250,000 of the million Americans living with HIV/AIDS do not know their status.

Lady Gaga Discusses Lupus
On Larry King Live, Lady Gaga said she had tested borderline positive for lupus but shows no signs or symptoms. The piece reviews the disease: fatigue and joint pain are common early signs, nine in ten patients are women, and drugs control symptoms but do not cure it.

Female to Male AIDS Transmission Higher in Pregnancy
Researchers at the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National Hospital studied more than 3,300 couples with one infected partner and found men whose pregnant partners had HIV faced double the infection risk; why remains unclear. The piece also reports rising infections in Uganda.

Drinking in Excess Associated with Increased Risk for Metabolic Syndrome
Among 1,529 current drinkers aged 20 to 84 in the 1999-2002 NHANES, those exceeding the Dietary Guidelines or binge drinking faced higher metabolic syndrome risk. Lead author Amy Fan notes that 58% of U.S. drinkers report drinking above the guidelines.
Autoimmune Diseases
Vitamin D low in patients with rheumatic disease
Of 231 patients seen at a Cork rheumatology clinic, 70 percent had low vitamin D levels and 26 percent were severely deficient, with the same pattern in younger and older patients. The findings were presented at the 2008 EULAR meeting in Paris.

Drinking alcohol may lower rheumatoid arthritis risk
In two Scandinavian studies covering more than 2,750 people, those in the highest quartile of alcohol intake were up to 50 percent less likely to have rheumatoid arthritis than the lightest drinkers, with the strongest effect among smokers carrying genetic risk. The link is only an association.
