Six years after the BBC reported cloned products had entered the U.S. food supply, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in 2010 he could not say whether cloned cattle or their offspring had reached it. A 2008 FDA report describes Large Offspring Syndrome in cloned newborns.

Tips for Healthy Living, Brought to You by Monsanto
An Organic Consumers Association newsletter reprinting an Acres U.S.A. interview with Vandana Shiva on seed sovereignty and organic farming, and flagging Monsanto's sponsorship of WebMD, where the group says advertorials run alongside health research.

FDA okays GM salmon fish for U.S. market
The FDA approved AquaBounty Technologies' petition to sell genetically modified salmon in the US market, calling the fish safe to eat. The salmon make growth hormone year-round and reach harvest size in about half the usual three years. No labelling is required.

GMO Alert: long-term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize
Seralini and colleagues republish their two-year rat study of Roundup-tolerant NK603 maize, grown with and without Roundup, and of Roundup alone in drinking water from 0.1 ppb, in Environmental Sciences Europe. It follows up an earlier 90-day investigation.

Say No to This Boneless "Meat" - It's Weirder Than You Ever Suspected
KFC rolled out boneless Original Recipe chicken across its 4,500 US locations and may drop bone-in chicken entirely. Nearly four of five US chicken servings are now off the bone, the reverse of 30 years ago, and Mercola warns processed nuggets carry additives and fillers.

FDA to Review Safety of GE Salmon
The FDA will hold a hearing on genetically engineered Atlantic salmon given growth hormones so they grow twice as fast; approval would make them the first genetically engineered animal cleared for food. Critics warn of heavier antibiotic use, outdated regulation and pressure on wild salmon.

USDA CONSUMER ALERT: Keeping Food Safe During An Emergency
USDA urges residents across the Southeast, Ohio Valley and New England to prepare for severe weather and flooding: keep appliance thermometers in the refrigerator and freezer, freeze containers of water and perishables in advance, and find out where to buy dry ice and block ice.

10 Reasons Why No One Needs GM Foods
Dr. Mercola lists arguments against GM crops: a World Bank report blamed biofuels for the 2008 food price spike, GM has not raised yield potential and GM soy yields have fallen, U.S. data show pesticide use rose, and a UN/World Bank report found better alternatives available.

Scientists Sequence Genome of the Woodland Strawberry
An international consortium including USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists sequenced the genome of the woodland strawberry, Fragaria vesca, a small, fast-cycling relative of peach, cherry and cultivated strawberry that serves as a model for the Rosaceae family.

Everything You HAVE TO KNOW about Dangerous Genetically Modified Foods (press release)
A promotional message for a Jeffrey Smith keynote video on genetically modified food, claiming audiences shift from low to high vigilance about avoiding GM brands after the presentation, and urging readers to share the video or buy DVDs.

Chickens Not Fooled by GM Crops
Dr. Mercola relays a report that Strilli Oppenheimer's chickens refused the maize in their feed, and testing confirmed it had been engineered to produce proteins toxic to insects and weeds. He cites earlier claims that animals avoid GM feed and an Austrian study of mice fed GM corn.

GMOs in foods
A primer on genetic engineering: how genes are moved between unrelated species in ways conventional breeding cannot achieve, and what combinations have been tried, from spider genes in goats to fish genes meant to give tomatoes and strawberries frost tolerance.
