An editor introduces a review by Mastrangelo and colleagues on ascorbate's therapeutic effect against cancer, and lists many other conditions the editor says vitamin C has been reported to help, from diabetes complications to wound healing.

Vitamin C, Ginkgo biloba reduce adverse effects of fluoride
A Toxicology in Industrial Health study found rats drinking water with 100 ppm fluoride showed impaired spatial learning and memory, while rats also fed vitamin C and Ginkgo biloba at 100 mg/kg were less affected. Water at 0.5 ppm, the WHO limit, caused no such effects.

Breaking Cancer News: High Doses of Vitamin C May Cure Colorectal Cancer
A 2015 Science paper reports that high doses of vitamin C selectively killed cultured human colorectal cancer cells carrying KRAS or BRAF mutations, through oxidative stress that disabled the enzyme GAPDH, and suppressed tumour growth in mutant mice.

Dietary vitamin C boosts cognitive function
Among 128 adults aged 65 to 80, vitamin C from food, but not from supplements, was positively associated with Digit Span scores, while vitamin E, beta-carotene and selenium were not linked to cognitive scores. The researchers say further research is needed.

Vitamin C boosts grip strength - new study
Among 2,184 men and women in the Framingham Offspring Cohort, averaging 58 years old, higher dietary vitamin C went with significantly greater grip strength in both sexes. The researchers cannot say how vitamin C produces the effect.

Supplemental folic acid taken in early pregnancy linked to gestational diabetes mellitus
An editor's note on a Diabetes Care report that folic acid supplements taken in early pregnancy raise the risk of gestational diabetes. It adds that synthetic folic acid has also been tied to breast cancer risk, while folate occurring naturally in vegetables shows no such link.

Beta-carotene may protect against ER- breast cancer
Among 1,502 breast cancer cases and matched controls, women with high serum alpha-carotene were 39% and those with high beta-carotene 51% less likely to have estrogen-receptor-negative breast cancer. High retinol ran the other way, with 137% higher risk of ER-negative, PR-negative tumours.

Vitamin D prevents breast cancer?
An Iranian case-control study of 135 breast cancer patients and 135 matched controls found women in the highest quartile of serum vitamin D were 70 percent less likely to have the disease, a link significant only among premenopausal women. Higher dietary intake tracked with lower risk too.
Vitamins
Could vitamin D prevent colorectal cancer?
In a case-control study, women in the highest fifth of total circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D were 46% less likely to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer than those in the lowest. The design cannot establish cause; binding-protein and free vitamin D showed no association.

Slowing Parkinson’s with CoQ10, decreasing hospitalizations, and more
Benita Lee's primer on coenzyme Q10 notes the body holds about 2 grams, concentrated in the heart, and needs 30-100 mg from the diet while European and Asian intakes average 3-6 mg. Levels drop with age, smoking and certain diseases, and statins can block a step in its synthesis.
Vitamins
Vitamin E, beta-carotene cut risk of Parkinson's disease
In a Japanese case-control study of 249 Parkinson's patients and 368 controls, high intake of vitamin E and beta-carotene was associated with 55 percent and 44 percent lower risk of the disease. No association appeared for vitamin C, alpha-carotene, cryptoxanthin, vegetables or fruit.
Vitamins
Ascorbate against MSG induced neurotoxicity
Researchers at the University of Navarra reported that glutamate kills dopaminergic neurons by driving oxidative stress, and that vitamin C protected the cells in a laboratory model of human neurons exposed to prolonged glutamate.
Vitamins
Vitamin C prevents esophageal cancer
A dose-response meta-analysis of more than a dozen reports found vitamin C intake inversely associated with esophageal cancer risk, suggesting supplements may cut it by up to 42%, with each additional 50 mg a day linked to a 13% lower risk.
Vitamins
Vitamin C lowers risk of lung cancer
A meta-analysis of 18 reports linked high vitamin C intake to a 17 percent lower rate of lung cancer diagnosis than low intake, with a dose-response pattern of 7 percent lower risk for each additional 100 mg a day. The association was stronger in studies of Americans.

Why Your Body Needs Multivitamins
An argument that most people should take a multivitamin even while eating well, with advice to build meals around fruits, nuts, vegetables, whole grains and healthy oils, and notes that pregnant women, children, older adults and vegetarians have differing needs.

Vitamin D cuts colorectal cancer risk
A case-control study in Gut led by Harvard's Shuji Ogino linked high plasma 25(OH)D to 90% lower colorectal cancer risk, but only in people whose tumors showed a strong intratumoural periglandular immune reaction, not in those with a weaker response.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency linked to poorer neuropsychological function, but not Alzheimer's
Using Framingham Heart Study blood samples and six years of follow-up, researchers found people with vitamin D deficiency had poorer executive function, processing speed and visuo-perceptual skills, and smaller hippocampal volumes, but no higher risk of dementia.

Vitamin D deficiency boosts pancreatic cancer risk
Cedric Garland and colleagues report that pancreatic cancer incidence in countries with low UVB irradiance ran six times that of high-UVB countries, an inverse association that held after adjusting for traditional risk factors. They read low UVB as a marker of low serum vitamin D.
