Drinking green tea helps prevent obesity - study confirms

Saturday Setp 22, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- Drinking green tea helps prevent obesity or weight loss, which is known for some time. A new laboratory study in the Food and Agricultural Chemistry has confirmed the notion that green tea prevents obesity.
M. Ueda and H. Ashida of Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Kobe University in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan tested the expression levels of obesity-related proteins in mesenteric white adipose tissue from C5BL/6 mice fed a high fat diet.
Green tea was found to increase the expression of insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-1 in both controls and rats fed the high fat diet. The increase in insulin-like growth factor binding protein -1 was associated with a decrease in adipose tissue weight.
In a laboratory study, the researchers treated 3T3-L1 adipocytes with green tea and its major polyphenol, (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and found the expression of IGFBP-1 increased in a dose-dependent manner.
The study suggests that green tea prevents obesity by promoting the production of IGFBP-1 in adipose tissue. The finding indicates that anything that can promote the expression of insulin-like growth factor binding protein can be used to prevent obesity.
Two third of Americans are considered either overweight and obesity. Many fad diets are promoted as weight loss measures. But people do not have to counter on those specially promoted fat diets to lose weight or prevent obesity.
