FDA takes step to remove artificial trans fats in processed foods

Editor's note: Intake of trans fat has been linked to 100,000 cardiovascular deaths every year in the U.S. But removal of added trans fat or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils alone does not guarantee that your processed food is healthy. Because of the link between trans fat and cardiovascular disease, many food companies now use palm oil. But some studies suggest that palm oil may not be as healthy as thought. Also partially hydrogenated vegetable oils are not the only source of trans fat. Naturally occurring trans fat is found in food products derived from cows. Trans fat can be formed when you cook your cooking oils like soybean oil and corn oil in your kitchen. And trans fat, regardless of its source, is not the only risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
