Anthony Koppel, the son of “Nightline” anchor Ted Koppel, was found dead in an upper Manhattan apartment late Monday night the Associated Press is reporting.
Koppel, who was 40, spent a number of hours drinking at a bar, where he was with a friend, Russell Wimberly. Wimberly told investigators that upon meeting Koppel at the bar, Koppel started buying him drinks. Koppell purportedly drank whiskey; neither man had had much to eat in the hours prior.
After drinking at the bar several hours, the pair went to an apartment belonging to a friend of Wimberley’s, Belinda Caban. Caban and Wimberly both told investigators that they told Koppel to “sleep it off,” soon after he arrived at the apartment. After discovering that he had gotten sick, Wimberly and Caban went into his room and discovered that he was not breathing. According to the New York Post, they then called 911.
Anthony Koppel was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 1.
From 2001-2008,Koppel served as attorney for NYC’s Housing Authority in the litigation division.
At this point, investigators are not naming a cause of death, although toxicology and tissue analysis will be forthcoming, the AP reports.
Anthony, who was 40, was one of Ted Koppel’s four children.
