Thursday Jan 15, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- Anything that inhibits or reduces the activity of enzymes that hydrolyze carbohydrates can help manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. An extract of Citrus limetta peel can reduce the activity of such enzymes significantly, according to a study led by Villanueva-Rodríguez S at Centro de Investigación y Asistencia en Tecnología y Diseño del Estado de Jalisco in JAL, Mexico and colleagues.Specifically the extract inhibited the activities of alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase by nearly 50% and nearly 30%, respectively, at a concentration of 20 mg/ml.The researchers said the inhibition is due likely to the high antioxidative polyphenols in the Citrus limetta peel (19.1 mg GAE/g).The study was reported in ScientificWorldJournal. 2014 (david Liu)
