A new study in Journal of Dietary Supplements suggests that taking Psidium guajava extracts may help treat diabetes mellitus. The study led by Dr. Subramanian Sorimuthu from University of Madras in Guindy Campus, Chennai, India and colleagues shows that 30-day treatment with a Psidium guajava extract decreased levels of serum glucose, HbA1c and increased levels of insulin in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus. For the study, rats with diabetes mellitus were treated with Psidium guajava leaf extract at a dosage of 300-mg/kg body weight. The authors concluded "The antidiabetic effect of the ethanolic extract of the Psidium guajava leaves may be due to the presence of flavonoids and other phenolic components present in the drug."
