A new report released on June 26 by the Natural Resources Defense Council shows that more than 18 million Americans in 2015 were served drinking water from systems that violated the Lead and Copper Rule.

The drinking water residents in Flint Michigan used has been found to have high levels of lead, which should otherwise trigger action by the standard set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  The report says that Flint Michigan is not the only city that serves drinking water with high lead.

The report says that violations are common and more than 90% of violations do not receive any corrective actions or penalties.

The report says some systems serve water with many times higher levels of lead and federal, state and local governments are unable to solve the problem quickly.  The best thing for food consumers to do is use a tap water filter to remove heavy metals including lead.  Many water filters can remove heavy metals like lead.

Lead is a toxic metal that can cause a series of severe health conditions including cancer.  The EPA has set a limit of lead on drinking water.   Young children are particularly vulnerable to the toxicity of lead, which can lower their IQ, and alter their behaviors.  (David Liu)
