Wed.Oct 9, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- Male sex hormones like androgen are commonly used for bodybuilding and weight loss. A case report in BMJ Case Reports suggests that taking male sex hormone androgen supplements can lead to the development of cortical venous thrombosis.
The report by O. Sveinsson and L Herrman from Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden says that it is not common for people who take male sex hormone androgen to develop cortical venous thrombosis after androgen therapy.
But the authors report that a young man developed cortical venous thrombosis after using anabolic steroids (dainabol in a dose of 20 mg per day) for a month for bodybuilding.
The man was hospitalized for symptoms including parasthesia and dyspraxia in the left hand after a tonic clonic seizure. Other symptoms included drowsiness, disorientation, sensory inattention, pronation drift and positive extensor response on the left side.
He was diagnosed with a right cortical venous thrombosis and accordingly he was treated with anticoagulation therapy using intravenous heparin for 11 days and then oral anticoagulation using warfarin afterwards.
Four months later, he recovered from the thrombosis. (DL)
