Sept 26, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- David Smith at University of Oxford in Oxford, United Kingdom and colleagues released a study to suggest that taking B vitamins may help prevent brain atrophy and cognitive decline in early stage Alzheimer's disease.

An early study of people with mild cognitive impairment has already indicated that B vitamin supplementation intended to help lower homocysteine could actually slow the rate of brain atrophy and cognitive decline.

The study led by Smith et al. shows that supplementation with B vitamins helped maintain episodic memory, global cognition and clinical dementia rating (CDR) sum-of-boxes better in people with early stage Alzheimer's disease with high serum concentrations of omega 3 - fatty acids.

Specifically, among patients with good omega-3 status, one third of those on B vitamin supplementation had global CDR scores greater than 0 (i.e., got worse) after two years compared with 59% among those treated with placebo.

The study also finds that in patients with early stage Alzheimer's disease, B vitamin supplementation did not help when concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids were low, and omega 3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was more effective than eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) at maintaining episodic memory, global cognition and CDR sum-of-boxes.

For the study, 266 patients with mild cognitive impairment or early stage Alzheimer’s disease aged ≥70 years who were randomized to B vitamins (folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12) or placebo for two years.

The authors conducted another study early and found that B vitamins helped slow brain atrophy in patients with a good baseline omega 3 fatty acid status.

This and other studies suggest that combinational supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins may help prevent progression of early stage Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment. (David Liu)
