Tuesday Jan 22, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- It has been known for a long time that bisphenol A or BPA - an ingredient found in plastic widely used to make food and beverage containers and other products, can potentially cause a series of medical conditions including diabetes, asthma, cancer and reproductive problems among others. The industry now produces many so-called BPA-free products which actually use a similar chemical called bisphenol S or BPS. A study shows bisphenol S disrupts hormone activity as BPA does.BPS and BPA have similar names and share a similar chemical structure and toxicity, according to a new study in the advance publications section of Environmental Health Perspectives. The study was conducted by Cheryl Watson from University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. (JD)
