Taste... Talk... Tweet... #GrenacheDay

September 19, 2014 - Avignon - Today marks the 5th Annual International Grenache Day (#Grenacheday) celebrating the most widely planted red grape in the world with tastings, plantings and tweetings across the world.

Why Grenache?? This under-appreciated grape varietal makes great wines greater and is one of the most adaptable food-pairing wines in the world, yet as a team player it doesn't always get the credit it deserves. Grenache's unique velvety mouthfeel has created a cult following across the world with those in the know who join in the International Grenache Day fun on the third Friday of September.

To Grenachistas it's really only a matter of time before more people begin to request Grenache the way they do Merlots, Pinot Grigios and Shiraz/Syrahs and begin to sip into something more comfortable!

What will YOU do for #GrenacheDay 2014? Go out and try some Grenache or bring it home! Grenache Association co-founder Nicole Rolet, producer of Chene Bleu wines, comments: "The enthusiasm about Grenache just keeps growing worldwide.  It really is a 21st century eco-superstar, its vines survive on minimum water and deep roots help weather heat and droughts."

Adds Jason Haas, Tablas Creek Vineyard: "Grenache is one of the most exciting grapes in California right now.  It's famous for its qualities in blends, and recognized to make some of the world's greatest rosés, but it's also now increasingly being bottled solo in California. The over 100% increase in planted acres in California's most prized coastal and mountain AVAs over the last decade is a testament to its growing popularity among winemakers and wine drinkers alike."

EDITORS NOTES: The Grenache Association is a grass-roots not-for-profit organization operated by volunteers who are passionate about wine and wine education, and open to lovers of fine wine across the world.

International #GrenacheDay was launched in 2010 following the first International Grenache Symposium at La Verriere's vineyard in France.  The symposium was founded by wine gurus Steven Spurrier and Michel Bettane, Walter McKinlay of Domaine de Mourchon, and Nicole Rolet of Chene Bleu wines.

Hundreds of international wine producers, merchants, restaurateurs and journalists in attendance agreed for the need to create an association to promote this unsung hero of the wine world.  Each year the world celebrates "the wine you know you just don't know it!"

Grenache is prevalent in the South of France, in regions such as the Southern Rhone (including Chateauneuf-du-Pape), Provence, Languedoc and Roussillon, as well as many of the best regions in Spain such as Priorat, Campos de Borja, Catalayud, and Sardegna in Italy.  It is also popular in Australia and the US, and grown in more than a dozen other countries around the world including China.

This eco-superstar has drought-resistant deep-rooted vines and is particularly well-suited to withstand climate change. More wine enthusiasts are discovering Grenache's unique ability to transmit its "terroir" and exploring this rich variety.

Our partners: AOC Rasteau, AOC Tavel, AOC Ventoux, CIVR (Roussillon), Fédération Syndicats de Producteurs de Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Inter Rhône.
