Desmoid tumor is noncancerous, but locally aggressive neoplasms with high odds of postoperative recurrence. A report released this year in World Journal of surgical Oncology suggests that Cyclooxygenase-2 (cox-2) inhibitors like celecoxib may help get this tumor into complete postoperative remission.
The case report involved a 57-year old woman who suffered recurrent epigastric pain and weight loss. She was diagnosed with a 10-cm tumor "over the pancreatic heat region and dilation of the pancreatic duct." After the tumor was surgically removed, she was treated with celecoxib and experienced complete remission. Within two years of the treatment, she did not have local recurrence or distant metastasis.
The long term efficacy of celecoxib in this case remained unknown. Further research is needed to confirm the effect of celecoxib in treating Desmoid tumor.
Cox-2 inhibitors like celecoxib are often used to treat inflammation, pain and fever. Cox-2 inhibitors are commonly used to treat medical conditions including ankylosing spondylitis, familial adenomatous polyposis, fibromatosis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, osteoarthritis, pain, period pain, rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis. In the U.S., celecoxib is the only available cox-2 inhibitor. (David Liu)
