Scientists at Tel-Aviv University in Tel-Aviv, Israel conducted a study and found evidence suggesting that curcumin, a major compound found in turmeric may be enlisted to prevent or even cure a type of lung cancer called non-small cell lung cancer.
For the study, one group of mice started eating a diet with 0.6% curcumin supplemented 14 days prior to receiving human lung cancer cells while the control group ate the otherwise same diet but without curcumin and were exposed to the same lung cancer cells.
As a result, mice that ate the diet with curcumin developed tumors that were 36% smaller than those found in mice in the control group and these study mice were also more likely to survive. The scientists found curcumin supplementation down-regulates the expression of inflammation biomarkers and promotes apoptosis in cancer cells.
