Curcumin helps glyburide better treat type 2 diabetes mellitus
Scientists at Kakatiya University in Warangal, AP, India reported a trial suggesting that curcumin supplements can help patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus being treated with glyburide therapy.
The open-label, randomized control trial included eight type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who were on glyburide and the trial was carried out for 11 days. On the first day after the administration of 5 mg of glyburide, blood samples were collected. Curcumin supplements were taken for the next 10 days and blood samples were collected on the 11th day.
As a result of the curcumin supplementation, low-density lipoprotein, very-low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides were decreased and high density lipoprotein was increased. And curcumin along with glyburide resulted in a better glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
