Saturday Sep 13, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- An Italian study in PLoS One suggests that eating fast food prior to getting pregnant can result in gestational diabetes.
Gestational diabetes may be gone after pregnancy is completed. But there is a risk for this type of diabetes to become type 2 diabetes mellitus. This diabetes can be detrimental to both the mother and the fetus if not adequately managed.
The study showed that moderate or high fast food consumption prior to pregnancy was associated with 31% or 86% increased risk of gestational diabetes, respectively, compared with those non-fast food eaters or those who did not eat much of any fast food prior to getting pregnant.
The study was based on data from 3,048 women free of diabetes at baseline who were surveyed between 1999 and March 2011. (David Liu, PHD)
