The group organizing the fluoride-free movement in the area, San Diegans for Safe Drinking Water, sent FAN the following information about this important event:

Bishop  McKinney, senior pastor of St. Stephen's Cathedral Church of God in Christ is inviting members of his congregation and the public at large to attend a town hall meeting at his church at 6:30 p.m., Monday, August 1, located at 5825 Imperial Avenue in San Diego, California.

Bishop McKinney will facilitate a panel of four, including representatives of the American Dental Association and David Kennedy, SDSDW member and past president of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. Dr. Kennedy will be joined by Paul Connett, PhD (chemistry), internationally known authority on the hazards of fluoridation.

Bishop McKinney has convened this debate due to his concerns for the disproportionate harm done to minority children and other susceptible groups including elderly, kidney patients, diabetics and thyroid patients.

In a recent statement, Bishop McKinney shared his concerns, "In the interest of public health, we need to know the full story about harm from fluorides. Our state and federal elected representatives should convene FluorideGate hearings immediately and put people under oath so we can finally get answers that parents and kidney patients, diabetics, thyroid patients, and others deserve to be told. And we need to find out why minority community leaders weren't told that fluorides disproportionately harm Black Americans, Hispanics, and other people of color."

San Diegans for Safe Drinking Water, a local organization that is growing in membership and is helping to coordinate the upcoming debate, shares the fact that the City of San Diego has been void of fluoride in its tap water until this past February 2011. The reason that the water had been protected is because of laws that had been voted in by the people of San Diego.

The City of San Diego has a Municipal code (Section 67) enacted by the citizens in 1954 that states "it is hereby declared to be unlawful for any person, including the City of San Diego and for its elective or appointed officers or employees, to use in or add to the water supply of this City any Fluorine, Sodium Fluoride, Sodium Silico Fluoride or any Fluoride compound, or to treat such water supply with aforesaid chemicals before delivery to the consumers thereof."

However, due to funding from First 5 Commission, the tap water is now being treated with fluosilicic acid. San Diegans for Safe Drinking Water know that First 5 Commission is funding by tobacco taxes:

-       Funding for the installation of tanks and two years of injections was paid for by tobacco tax funds.

-       State law communicates that no water district can be compelled to fluoridate unless funds come from sources "other than rate payers and tax payers."

-       The original state fluoride bill AB 733 does not mention or authorize use of fluosilicic acid as a as a useable source of fluoride.

Please show your support for ending fluoridation in our community by your attendance at this important gathering and please extend this invitation to everyone you know who is concerned with this insult to our health and freedom of choice. This meeting will be attended by media and local politicians and we hope to convene a large attendance of those opposed to fluoridation. Dr. Kennedy and Dr. Connett are both knowledgeable and dynamic speakers. This promises to be an informative and entertaining event.

It is critical that we have a large attendance. Please come if you can.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

San Diegans for Safe Drinking Water
