Dear Readers,
We have only two days left to reach our ambitious goal of raising $100,000 from 500 donors by midnight December 31.
Yesterday was a very big day for us. We raised over $11,000 and that in turn triggered the $2000 matching grant. Our current total now stands at $63,398 from 391 donors.
But the good news doesn't end there. Another 9 donors will give us a total of 400 donors, which will trigger another donation of $1000 and if we can get another 100 donors after that (i.e. 500 donors) we will earn an additional $2000.
To help with these goals there are several incentives:
1) U.S.donations are tax-deductible
2) All donors will receive our new bumper sticker.
3) For a donation of $50 you can select our terrific coffee mug with the message, Fluoride: Not in My Coffee (we have slashed the premium from $125 - only available up to midnight Dec 31!).
For details of other premiums and how to make a donation online go here.
We are getting closer and closer to our "impossible" dream. We say "our" here - but surely it is "your" dream as well? We're all in this together, and we need each other working together around the world to win this one! To win we have to put our battle on a sustainable financial footing. We showed we could win a lot of local battles this year but to win the ultimate battle against the practice itself we need to do more and that takes money. Will you help?
Broadening FAN's Base
Meanwhile, FAN is broadening its potential support base for next year. I will now explain how and why.
Fluoride is not the only toxic we have to deal with in our daily lives and there are many other serious environmental health threats, but fluoridation is the easiest problem to solve: we only have to turn off a spigot at the public water works. But to do that requires political will and to get that political will we need thousands and thousands of people informed and organized. We have started to do that in 2011 in a more professional way, but we still need to educate and mobilize many more people. That is why we need to reach out to other campaigns fighting other toxic threats and see how and where we can work together without compromising our agenda or principles. I think we can do that. Please read on.
Getting ten toxics out of our lives
It was while I was teaching environmental chemistry and toxicology at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, that I made a list of ten toxics that I wanted to see eliminated from our daily lives (I retired in May 2006). These goals were:
1) To get the element mercury out of our mouths (misleadingly labeled "silver fillings" contain about 50% mercury, see here)
2) To get organic mercury out of vaccines (injecting thimerosal into a baby's bloodstream is insane in my view, click here for the basics)
3) To get fluoride out of our water (Fluoride Action Network and the book The Case Against Fluoride)
4) To get aspartame out of food products (see here )
5) To get sugared soft drinks out of schools (these contribute to tooth decay AND obesity)
6) To get pesticides and genetically engineered foods out of agriculture (see Jeffrey Smith's book The Seeds of Deception
and the Organic Consumers Association, and Beyond Pesticides)
7) To get PVC plastic out of commerce (dioxin is produced during PVC production and when PVC products are burned,see here)
8) To get incineration out of waste management (incineration is a source of many toxics into the air and into the ash that's left behind. I have fought incinerator projects for 26 years, see here)
9) To get the word "waste" out of the English dictionary (Waste is either resources in the wrong place or a product of bad industrial design. I am a strong proponent for a Zero Waste strategy as a stepping stone towards sustainability, see here)
10) To get bureaucrats without scientific integrity out of government (a public servant should not lie to the public and if they are caught doing so it should be grounds for instant dismissal).
Broadening our base of support
In 2011, with the inspired leadership of Dr. Mercola, FAN attempted to broaden the base of those opposing fluoridation by forming a loose alliance with four other national groups (the alliance is called Health Liberty):
1) Consumers for Dental Choice (fighting to end the use of mercury amalgams, led by Charlie Brown);
2) The Organic Consumers Association (fighting for genuine organic agriculture and against the use of genetically engineered crops and products led by Ronnie Cummins);
3) The Institute for Responsible Technology (led by Jeffrey Smith, author of The Seeds of Deception)
4) The National Vaccination Information Center (led by Barbara Loe Fisher)
Obviously all groups will retain their separate autonomies but where we see the possibility of lending support to each other's campaigns we will try to do so.
I believe that this alliance will make our efforts even more successful in 2012 and offers even greater reason to put our operation on a sustainable basis. Which brings us back to our annual fundraiser.
Please make a donation today. There are only two days left before our deadline of midnight December 31. Don't forget that 9 more donors earns us another $1000 and another 100 donors (on top of that) earns us an additional $2000. Every donation - large or small - counts.
