Monday Sep 15, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Su Jin Song and colleagues at Yonsei University in Seoul, Republic of Korea conducted a study and confirmed that green coffee bean extract is effective at reducing weight (fat) gain in mice fed a high fat diet.  The study suggests that taking green coffee bean extract can prevent obesity or treat obesity in people who eat a high fat diet.

The researchers found the obesity-preventative effect of green coffee bean extract was rendered by downregulating "genes involved in WNT10b- and galanin-mediated adipogenesis and TLR4-mediated proinflammatory pathway and stimulation of GLUT4 translocation to the plasma membrane in white adipose tissue."  In other words, green coffee bean extract prevents adipogenesis and  inflammation in visceral adipose tissue.

The study results indicate that green coffee bean extract reverses high fat diet induced fat accumulation and insulin resistance.

The minimum effective dose is 0.3%, which is equivalent to 1.45 grams of green coffee bean extract for a person with 60 kg body weight.  The green coffee bean extract used in the study was decaffeinated, but any green coffee bean extract with caffeine should not affect the efficacy.
