Wednesday June 18, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A report published in the April 2014 issue of The FASEB Journal suggests taking green coffee bean extract as a dietary supplement, at least one special green coffee bean preparation made by Cepham Inc., can be effective in treating obesity or weight management.
Green coffee beans contain active ingredients including chlorogenic acids (powerful antioxidants), caffeine, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, quinides, lignans and trigonelline. Chlorogenic acids have been known to reduce the absorption of dietary fat and promote glucose metabolism and protect against aging pathophysiology, according to the report.
The green coffee bean extract preparation (GCB-70) made by Cepham Inc. contains 70% total chlorogenic acids including 35% of 5-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA). In comparison, green coffee bean extract presently available on the market contains 45% total chlorogenic acids including 15% 5-caffeoylquinic acid.
Studies have proved that GCB-70 is "safe, potent, which potentiates antioxidant efficacy against oxidative stress, regulates blood pressure and improve cognitive functions," the report says.
Also, the green coffee bean extract supplement boosts glucose and fat metabolism, meaning that it can be used for weight loss or the prevention of obesity.
Some Japanese studies show that green coffee bean extract can inhibit the enzymatic activity of pancreatic lipase, which is needed for fat absorption and utilization. With this inhibitory property, green coffee bean extract is expected to prevent obesity. (David Liu, PHD)
