Thursday Feb 4, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- Dr. Connie Weaver at Purdue University and colleagues have recently reported in JCEM that taking a supplement with both calcium and hesperidin, a flavanone found in citrus fruits, helps prevent bone loss in postmenopausal women. The researchers conducted a small trial of 12 healthy postmenopausal women and found a supplement with calcium and hesperidin helped improve bone calcium retention by 5.5%. Hesperidin alone did not render the preventative effect on bone loss in the subjects.Early animal studies indicated that hesperidin helps prevent bone loss in ovariectomized rats.
