A trial released recently in JAMA Neurology suggests that inosine supplementation may help slow the progression of Parkinson disease.  Previous biological, epidemiological and clinical studies indicated that urate elevation may help slow disability progression in Parkinson disease. The current phase-2 clinical trial shows that inosine supplementation was safe, tolerable and effective in raising serum urate concentration. The trial did not monitor the progression of Parkinson disease though.  For the trial, 75 men and women at a mean age of 62 years who were diagnosed with early Parkinson disease while not yet required to receive treatment, and had a serum urate concentration lower than 6 mg/dL were assigned to receive 2 500-mg capsules per time and three times per day and followed for up to 24 months.
