| The Dutch Oven's Pioneer History by Matt Pelton |
He brought his passion with him on a two-year mission to Boston for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he packed his 10-inch Dutch oven in his suitcase. At every opportunity, he learned to cook food from the many cultures in the Boston area. When he returned home, he met and married his wife, Katie. It's now been 14 years, and they have three wonderful children: Megan, age 12; Tristan, age 10; and Braxton, age 5. Pelton has published two previous books: "From Mountaintop to Tabletop" and "The Cast Iron Chef." Pelton was bitten by the bug of competitive cooking and has competed in the Kansas City Barbecue Society competitions in the pro division. He also competes in the International Dutch Oven Society's advanced cooking circuit, where he and his cooking partner Doug Martin won the 2012 and 2013 IDOS World Championships. Pelton travels around the West competing and teaching Dutch oven classes.Doug Martin:
Doug Martin grew up in Wichita, Kansas, as the oldest of five children. His familymoved to Asheville, North Carolina, when he was a junior in high school. He left for college on a soccer scholarship after graduating from high school and eventually joined the Army. He was stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, where he met and married his wife, Racheall. Fifteen years later, and they have one beautiful daughter, Isabella, age 11. They moved to Racheall's home state of Utah in 2003. A few years after moving to Utah, Martin gained his desire to learn how to cook. He began with the art of barbecue. Determined to do it right, he solicited the help of a local barbecue restaurant owner who became his mentor. His first barbecue competition saw him take Grand Champion. This only inspired him to learn more and to perfect his skills. He eventually took a cake-decorating class, where he learned techniques for making his already delicious cakes look beautiful. He met his current Dutch oven teammate, Matt Pelton, in the barbecue arena. It was there that these two formed a partnership that would make them the only Dutch oven team to win the International Dutch Oven Society World Championship two years in a row, in 2012 and 2013.
Mark Hansen:
Mark started cooking in his Dutch ovens in 2006, when his wife surprised him with one as a Father's Day present. His first cooking attempt was pizza, and the family instantly declared it a success! He began a tradition of cooking the family's Sundaydinners in his Dutch ovens.
In April of the following year, he thought he should start sharing what he learned, and he established the Mark's Black Pot blog. Years and hundreds of recipes later, it's still one of the most widely read Dutch oven blogs on the Internet.
Hansen lives in Eagle Mountain, Utah with his wife, Jodi, and their two boys, who are also budding chefs.
