Monday June 10, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- High cholesterol is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.  Women who have a high level of cholesterol and desire to lower cholesterol may want to start using a low fat diet as a new study published in Menopause just found low fat diet lowers total cholesterol.

Wu Liping and colleagues meta-analyzed published data from eight trials involving 1536 women and found subjects using a low fat diet had lower serum concentrations of total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

More detailed analyses revealed that only premenopausal women, but not postmenopausal women can enjoy the benefit from a low fat diet.

Cholesterol can be effectively lowered by using statins.  But statins have been known to cause a variety of adverse effects.  Alternatives are available including red yeast rice, omega-3 fatty acids or fish oil and plant sterols. *reporting by Jimmy Downs)
