Saturday Nov 21, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study published this year in Indian Journal of Clinical Anatomy and Physiology suggests that taking magnesium supplements may help with glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.
For the study, 60 patients with diabetes mellitus were taking an oral magnesium supplement while other 60 patients took placebo. Fasting blood sugar and serum magnesium were measured before and after the intervention.
In diabetes mellitus patients, the mean baseline value for fasting blood sugar was144 mg/dL, compared to 129 mg/dL after 16-week treatment. In comparison, the baseline for the controls was 145 mg/dL, compared to 134 mg/dL at the end of the study.
