Mediterranean diet is known to be heart healthy.  A new study in European Journal of Heart Failure now suggests that eating a Mediterranean diet reduces risk for developing heart failure and the risk of death from heart failure in men.

The study shows that high adherence to Mediterranean diet was inversely associated with risk of heart failure and mortality from heart failure.  The reduction in risk of developing heart failure was up to 31% while risk in death from the health condition can be reduced by 45%.

The study was based on data from 37,308 men in the Cohort of Swedish Men who were free from cardiovascular disease at baseline.

The study concludes that "High adherence to a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of HF and mortality from HF (heart failure) in men.” (David Liu)
