We've spent several long weeks eagerly tracking the election results on Oregon's Measure 92 – a ballot initiative to label genetically engineered foods. On Election Day, Measure 92—Oregon’s ballot initiative to label genetically engineered foods—was trailing and had been reported in the media as being defeated. But thanks to the support and hard work of all of you, that gap has narrowed to barely 800 hundred votes, triggering an automatic recount, and making it likely the closest statewide election in Oregon history!
In fact, they already have a bill in Congress to undermine our efforts in states across the country and a Congressional hearing on the bill is expected as early as next week!
The Grocery Manufacturers Association, along with allies like Monsanto and Dow Chemical, have teamed up with Koch-backed Congressman Mike Pompeo of Kansas on a federal bill that would deny your right to know what’s in your food. We call it the “Denying Americans the Right-to-Know Act” (the DARK Act).
The good news is that Rep. Peter DeFazio and Sen. Barbara Boxer introduced the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act(H.R. 1699/S. 809) to make GE food labeling mandatory across the country. Supported by 63 Representatives and 17 Senators, this common sense bill directs the Food and Drug Administration to use its authority to enact a federal, mandatory GE labeling policy that would guarantee all Americans the right to know.
Thanks for everything that you do,
