Thursday may 29, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A report in Przeglad Gastroenterology recommends that patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) should eat a nutritionally balanced diet as the diet play a key role in the treatment of NAFLD.
Authors say that a balanced diet leads to weight loss and improves the condition of NAFLD and they recommend that patients with NAFLD should use 40 to 50 % calories from complex carbohydrates, less than 30% calories from fat which should be mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, and 15 to 20% calories from protein.
Specifically, the authors advise that fructose should be avoided as this sugar is linked to the etiology of NAFLD.
Dr. Colin T Campbell, nutrition professor at Cornell University conducted research and found evidence suggesting that milk protein consumption makes humans prone to developing liver diseases including liver cancer. His studies suggest that a plant-based diet can help prevent chronic liver disease. (David LIu)
