Introduction to the Awareness Day 2014 Hashtag Showcase

(Visit the Awareness Day 2014 Hashtag Showcase Page in Spanish.)

National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day: Inspiring Resilience, Creating Hope (Awareness Day) 2014 is all about the power of peer support. That’s why this year the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will launch a hashtag showcase in observance of Awareness Day to open communication about the experiences of youth and how they draw strength from others.

Beginning on April 15 and for the weeks leading up to Awareness Day, SAMHSA is encouraging young adults across the country who have experience with mental health or mental health and substance use challenges to share their own inspiring stories of resilience and peer support on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Tumblr using the hashtag #IGetSupportFrom.

The #IGetSupportFrom social media posts that best illustrate positive examples of peers support for young adults with behavior health challenges—especially in areas such as education, housing, accessing health care, and employment—will be showcased at the national launch event on Tuesday, May 6 in Washington, DC.

The national launch event will also feature — Jim, Michelle, Qaiel, and Sean — four young adults who will discuss their experiences with mental health or mental health and substance use challenges, their work as peer support leaders, and their insights on what it takes to address the unique needs of young adults like them. You can watch the live Webcast of the launch event from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. (EDT) at www.samhsa.gov/children/liveEvent.asp on May 6.

To participate in the showcase on Twitter, frame your story by completing this sentence:

As a young adult #IGetSupportFrom ______________.

As we approach Awareness Day 2014, use #IGetSupportFrom to share photos, videos, tweets, and status updates telling others how peer support helps you tackle challenges related to education, employment, housing, or health care access.

Here are some tips on how to join the conversation:

  • Follow @samhsagov on Twitter; “Like” SAMHSA on Facebook.
  • Visit samhsa.gov/children to find out about all the Awareness Day 2014 events taking place across the country.
  • Share your photos, videos, tweets, and status updates using the hashtag #IGetSupportFrom to tell your own story about the power of peer support. When you submit a photo or video, be sure to include the #IGetSupportFrom,#SAMHSA, and/or #HeroesofHope hashtags and @samhsagov.
