Tuesday Feb 17, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- A review suggests that dietary polyphenols found in apple (apple polyphenol), bilberries (anthocyanin), turmeric (curcumin), green tea epigallocatechin-3-gallate and other polyphenols), grapefruit (naringenin), olive oil (olive oil polyphenols), pomegranate polyphenols and red grapes (resveratrol) may help inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an idiopathic, often chronic, relapsing inflammation of the bowel. The disease mainly refers to Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The review finds evidence confirming that "dietary polyphenols possess both protective and therapeutic effects in the management of IBD mediated via down-regulation of inflammatory cytokines and enzymes, enhancing antioxidant defense, and suppressing inflammatory pathways and their cellular signaling mechanism. The take-home message is that patients with IBD should eat a  lot of polyphenol-rich fruit and vegetables.Farzaei MH, Rahimi R, Abdollahi M, The role of dietary polyphenols in the management of inflammatory bowel disease.  Current Pharmaceutical Biotechnology [2015, 16(3):196-210]
